[Blog] Where’s the best place to see a band?
Thu, February 02, 2012Hmmm. Interesting question.
Have you ever been to see a band that you really like and it’s been slightly ruined by the venue? Whether it’s really bad acoustics, lots of pillars getting in the way of your view or just so badly laid out that if you’re not 7ft tall you can’t see anything at all? Annoying isn’t it.
We all love going to see our favourite bands and enjoying the whole experience, not just the music, it’s what it’s about, otherwise you’d just sit in the house and listen to them on the stereo would you. There are some absolutely amazing venues across the country, some because they’re a classic in history like Liverpool’s Cavern Club. Some are brilliant because they are just breathtaking in their décor and architecture: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IoZTK-qevHg.
Some aren’t venues at all like this one I stumbled across one day on my walk home from work: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_vue3nEtEUI.
My favourite venue of all in Union Chapel, a really beautiful church which is still used as a church on Sundays, but the gigs there are truly phenomenal. Framed by a huge stained glass window and surrounded by church candles, the shows are intimate. Although they are uncomfortable, church pews aren’t nice, take a cushion.
But then I watched a friends band play in a cave in Nottingham, which is so far from Union Chapel it’s ridiculous but it was amazing too. Coldplay in an Olympic tennis court in Rome is another I ended up at, just showing us that you can find really good music anywhere.
I think the rule is that as long as there isn’t a 7ft man stood in front of you and you can hear the band, you’re probably in for a treat, wherever on earth you are.
Here’s a few of the professionals showing us exactly how they can do what they do anywhere they fancy doing it. Let us know where the strangest place you’ve listened to a band is and see who wins!
1. I wouldn’t hate getting to work as much if this happened every day.

2. It doesn’t look like many people knew about this one, I wish I’d been alive to see it!

3. Was it Dave that brought the wall down?

4. One song wasn’t enough was it? Here she is and here the venue is, in all their glory. Enjoy.
