Who is the next big thing?

The world of the charts makes me feel old. The number of ‘next big things’ I’ve lived through is one reason, the other is that they always seem to be so young, beautiful and talented while I just keep on getting older and more miserable.

Another reason why the “next big thing” tag gets to me is it was used to describe me at school and I was flattered. Then I found out it was because they all thought I was the most likely to get fat, and I realised it wasn’t such a compliment.

It does help to keep the world of pop fresh though and it also gives us something to talk about so I can’t complain too much, I’ll keep my insecurities to myself you’ll be glad to hear.

We’ve had a whole host of next big things over the years, I remember when Coldplay’s yellow came out and they said it, and they were. I also remember when they said it about Kings of Leon and again, they were. There have been plenty of people who have proved the critics right, Adele and Amy Winehouse to name a couple of British talents to break through and conquer the charts. There have also however been a lot who haven’t made the grade. Rumer to name just one.

But this year the list is endless. So many people are tipped to break through into our eardrums from every angle this year that I hope a few of them do to save us from the mediocrity of the X-Factor entrants. Let’s have a look…

1. I say she’s the next big thing but I think she already is. We’ll definitely be hearing a lot more from this lady.

2. Releasing a song with Professor Green can do your career no harm at all and she knew it. Now she’s out on her own and she’s doing just fine by the looks of it.

3. He looks the part and he definitely sounds the part too. I hope he is appreciated a whole lot more than 1 Direction.

4. I don’t know if they were named after the Tom Jones song, but thankfully they don’t sound like it!

5. And finally we have Frank Ocean, he sounds good so he might just make it, that’s if he doesn’t swerve in that car and end up in the ocean. Sorry, awful.
