It’s the pinnacle of the American television year, it has a bigger audience than the Oscars and it’s probably one of the most confusing sports to any one who isn’t from the USA.

American Football, despite the fact that they don’t really use a ball or use their feet most of the time is the biggest sport in the most powerful country in the world, but it’s not the sport which takes most of the headlines. In true American fashion, the glitz, the glamour and the headlines are all saved for not he sport but the half time show.

As Brits, we could never imagine The Rolling Stones coming out on to the pitch half way through the FA Cup Final and doing a set to screaming fans, or seeing the latest single from the X Factor winner being performed on the 18th hole at St Andrews, but we are in Britain.

They do things differently on the other side of the pond.

That could be the biggest understatement in the history of this blog, and it probably is. But it’s true. This year alone the half time show for the Super Bowl saw the stage filled with the likes of Madonna, Nicki Minaj and M.I.A. which is quite a line up for any stage anywhere in the world let alone a sporting event. But as I say, they do things differently over there.

Controversy inevitably hit though, as it seems to wherever M.I.A. goes, she gave the middle finger to the crowd during the performance as the television crews were beaming her gesture to 111.3 million people in America alone. Wow.

Looks like they spent all their budget on the party and forgot about the security!
