[Blog] WHITNEY HOUSTON R.I.P.

Fri, February 17, 2012

It’s tragic that we are here again, writing another blog celebrating a life which ended too soon in horrific circumstances, played out in front of the worlds media.

For a woman who sold over 170 million albums and counts 6 Grammy’s, 2 Emmy’s and over 400 awards in total through her career, it was a terribly sad way to bow out.

It seems as though Whitney Houston was destined to become a star. I mean, how can a girl who started singing at aged 11, with Dionne Warwick as her cousin and Aretha Franklin as her Godmother not become huge? That is possibly the best stock a singer in her genre could ever have hoped to have come from.

And she did. She flourished under the tuition of these greats and went on to become one of the most celebrated and decorated female artists in the world of music.

I don’t know about you but the thing I remember her for the most is her ability to hold a ridiculously long note, over and over and over again in her song from The Bodyguard, “I Will Always Love You.” A song which was written and originally performed by Dolly Parton (there’s a bit of pub quiz trivia for you).

Sadly though, over the last 10-15 years she fell victim, like so many stars do, to drugs and her behaviour and talent began to suffer. Being married to live wire Bobby Brown probably didn’t help her cause but what’s done is done and we have another tragedy to put alongside Amy Winehouse, Michael Jackson, Kurt Cobain and the list goes on...

Perhaps it is the price of fame, perhaps it is the price of being in the spotlight or perhaps it is something that we are yet to work out. Let’s hope it doesn’t happen again anytime soon. Rest in peace Whitney.
