Congratulations Jay-Z and Beyonce!

Can we start this week by saying congratulations to the king and queen of the charts, Jay-Z and Beyonce, on the birth of their 1st child, a baby girl!

Blue Ivy Carter is the latest in a long string of celebrity kids born to the rich, famous, talented and chart topping. The first thing I noticed was that she seems to have got off lightly with her name. Blue Ivy, although it sounds like the kind of plant that a guidebook would tell you to steer clear of when walking in the woods to avoid a painful rash, isn’t as ridiculous as many out there. Celebrities seem to be locked in an unspoken battle as to who can give their kids the stupidest names, almost as if the Matthew, Mark, Luke and John’s of the name world aren’t quite good enough for their kids, best leave those ones to the peasants.

Frank Zappa called one of his daughters Moon Unit, Coldplay’s Chris Martin named his daughter Apple (really?) and we best not even start on Bob Geldof’s state of mind when he picked Fifi Trixibell, Pixie and Peaches.

The other thing about these kids is that they will never know a regular life, not like we have. They were born into the spotlight and there they will most probably stay for the rest of their lives. Only yesterday did I see Grazia magazine asking if Anais Gallagher was the next Kate Moss after being photographed by Mario Testino. Is she the next Kate Moss? Leave her alone she’s 12 years old was my first thought, my second was that these kids don’t seem to have a chance, they will be judged for their whole lives purely because of the careers of their parents.

Still, this is probably more down to the media than it is to the parents so it is comforting to see that some of the parents of these children are willing to, usually through the medium of song, show that they are dedicated and loving parents and that in this way the kids in the spotlight will be able to grow up with at least the same thing as most of us, parental love, support and affection.

Let’s have a look at a few of the best shall we, and hope, despite the media whirlwind, they can grow up to be as normal as is possible under the circumstances!

1. Stevie Wonder wrote one of his most famous tracks about the way he felt once he became a father. The overwhelming nature of his love comes across in the song, and it’s such a feel good song you almost feel a little bit jealous of the little one. That and you know you’ll never be sung a lullaby to get to sleep quite like they will.

2. They aren’t the best known band in the world but they deserve a special mention just for this one lyric alone. “I hope that your friends are true and funny, your girlfriends are sweet, and wear tight pants, and after your heart is gently broken I hope that you get a second chance.” Now that is a cool Dad, am I wrong?

3. It might be a little bit over sentimental and a bit different to his regular material but perhaps fatherhood is softening Jay-Z. He might quit rapping and join a folk band if he keeps on getting soft at this rate. Now that might be interesting but we’ll have to wait and see! For now here is his celebration of becoming a father.

4. David Bowie is someone you’d associate more with crazy outfits and Labyrinth than you would parenthood but he wrote this song when he found out his first child had been born. I think parts of it are him crossing his fingers and hoping that his “kooky” parents aren’t too much for him when he grows up. I think we can imagine that he might have a point!

5. Steven Tyler apparently wrote this for his daughter Liv, who then appeared in Armageddon, the film that used it for its epic scene. His dreams came true as he could then buy the DVD and not only would he not miss a thing, he could even get himself the bonus extras. Who says you don’t get what you wish for?
